Background to the Commission
Launched in April 2006, the Commission on Growth and Development is an independent body consisting of 21 leaders - many of them economists and many of whom have been political leaders - who have been brought together to deepen the understanding of sustained, rapid and inclusive growth and development. For a full list of commissioners, see www.growthcommission.org.
Working on the premise that future global challenges are best met in conditions of rising and sustained prosperity and drawing on the experiences of the 12 countries that have been able to grow at more than 7% for periods of more than 25 years since World War 2, the Commission has been addressing the long-term forces that underpin economic growth.
The Commission's conclusions will highlight the actions that are most likely to improve developing countries' growth prospects. The goal is to provide leaders in developing countries with a framework within which country specific growth strategies and policies can more effectively be developed.
The Commission is supported by the Governments of Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the World Bank Group.
