Inside Hamas

Wednesday 2 May 2007 13:30 to 14:30

Participants

Zaki Chehab, London Bureau Chief, Al-Hayat newspaper and LBC TV and author of Inside Hamas: The Untold Story of Militants, Martyrs and Spies
Dr Rosemary Hollis, Director of Research, Chatham House

Type: Members event

Zaki Chehab will draw on the research for his new book, including personal knowledge of episodes in the evolution of the movement hitherto concealed. He will ask the questions: how do they really operate? and how 'Islamic' they are? He will argue that Hamas developed with the implicit encouragement of the Israelis in their attempts to weaken Fatah and comment on the prospects for the new National Unity Government that Hamas has now formed with its Fatah rivals. Rosemary Hollis will discuss Zaki Chehab's presentation and offer some of her views on the organization and Palestinian politics more generally. The event will be chaired by Jon Snow of Channel 4 News.
