Professor John G. Ruggie, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Business and Human Rights
Chair: Sir Brian Fall, Government Relations Adviser, Rio Tino plc; UK Ambassador to the Russian Federation (1992-95)
Type: Members event
The speaker will argue that the international community has struggled unsuccessfully for years to strengthen the international human rights regime as it relates to corporate activities. He was appointed by the former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, as Special Representative in this area, after an attempt to promote binding international norms in 2003 triggered near universal opposition in the business community and objections by many governments, but enthusiasm by campaigners. In this role he has undertaken extensive research, including fourteen multi-stakeholder consultations on five continents, which he will present to the Human Rights Council at its June session. His remarks will give a preview of his report and provide an opportunity to discuss these issues.
