Six months after the parliamentary election, Pakistan remains in the grip of political uncertainty, convulsed by a severe economic crisis and on-going militant violence. Differences within the ruling coalition over the reinstatement of the judges dismissed last year and the future of President Musharraf have aggravated the sense of drift. Were the expectations of a 'return' to democracy misplaced, and if so, what now for a state whose stability is widely judged to be vital to global security?
