Hart says US foreign policy lacks 'grand strategy'
15 February 2005
Senator Gary Hart, former Democratic Party presidential nominee, delivered a critical analysis of the Bush administration's foreign and energy policies in a speech today at Chatham House.
Senator Hart described the invasion and continued occupation of Iraq as an 'act of empire' and said the current insurgency is a result of America's narrow focus on military conquest. He said that US foreign policy needs a 'grand strategy that looks beyond war to the subsequent peace'.
Senator Hart outlined his belief that the war in Iraq has led to a greater terrorist threat to America and that this threat may come in the form of WMD arriving in the US via relatively under secure shipping ports.
He went on to describe Americans energy policy as 'immoral', as it is 'totally dependent on the Saudis', and that continuing military adventure in the region sees the 'sacrificing' of US lives in order to 'drive inefficient cars'.
