US Ambassador: EU-US natural partners despite differences

17 May 2005

Rockwell Schnabel, US Ambassador to Europe, said today in a speech at Chatham House, that when he moved to California from his native Holland he found that the spirit and dynamism of his adopted homeland was the polar opposite of the Europe he had left behind.

He said that Americans want their values to play a lead role in foreign policy. Europeans become uncomfortable when President Bush proclaims his profound faith, his reliance on God's support and guidance, or speaks of the axis of evil. The Ambassador said that Europeans squirm when Americans preach the gospel of freedom and liberty.

Despite their differences, Ambassador Schnabel said that the US and Europe must work together to be at the forefront of encouraging democracy and tolerance around the world. He said that he was certain, after over three years in Europe, that America is re-discovering Europe as a natural and indespensible partner.
