Yushchenko is first Chatham House Prize recipient

20 September 2005

Chatham House is delighted to announce that the recipient of the first Chatham House Prize is Ukraine's President Victor Yushchenko. The award is for the individual deemed to have made the most significant contribution to the improvement of international relations in the previous year.

The selection process for the Chatham House Prize drew on the expertise of our research teams, our presidents and the diverse interests of the full Chatham House membership. Chatham House members cast votes for their preferred candidate from a shortlist of five. They agreed that Victor Yushchenko, elected as President of Ukraine in the aftermath of the orange revolution, demonstrated considerable courage and skill in steering a peaceful process of political change in Ukraine.

Victor Bulmer-Thomas, Director of Chatham House said:
'President Yushchenko's achievement as a statesman was to manage a domestic political revolution whilst simultaneously dealing with neighbouring states who have sought to influence Ukraine's political and economic life. His adeptness in handling relations with other states has ensured that Ukraine, as a pivotal state in Eastern Europe and Russia's most important western neighbour, has not become the cause of a serious deterioration in relations between Russia and Western Europe.'

HM The Queen, who will be accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, will present the award at a reception at the Mansion House in London on 17 October. The reception will be followed by a gala dinner with a keynote speech by Cherie Booth QC. The award of the Chatham House Prize will become an annual event.
