CH Fellow is new French-American Foundation President

4 October 2005

The French-American Foundation announced today in New York that its Board of Directors had appointed Nicholas W. F-R. Dungan as the new President of the Foundation. Mr. Dungan replaces Brigadier General Anthony A. Smith PhD (USA Ret.), who is retiring after nearly five years in the position.

Michael E. Patterson, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the French-American Foundation, said: "We are delighted to welcome Nicholas Dungan, who will build on Tony Smith's noteworthy record of achievements to take the French-American Foundation to an even higher level of prominence and performance. We salute Tony Smith as he retires from more than half a century of service to his country, to international relations and to the French-American relationship. Nicholas's background in business, finance and international affairs makes him especially well suited to the challenges ahead - together with his complete dedication to the French-American partnership at the core of trans-Atlantic relations."

Nicholas W. F-R. Dungan is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House, London, where his areas of expertise are trans-Atlantic relations and non-state actors. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S.-based Chatham House Foundation.

Prior to joining the French-American Foundation, Mr. Dungan spent more than 20 years as an international investment banker in New York, London and Paris. During his career he has held senior positions with several major international firms, notably Merrill Lynch & Co. and Société Générale; he also acquired significant strategic advisory experience from smaller platforms, including his own firm Dungan Associates LLC. Assignments performed by Mr. Dungan during his investment banking career include prominent transactions and strategic advisory services for, among others, some of the largest multinational companies and financial institutions in France.

Mr. Dungan holds the diplôme from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences-Po) in economics and finance and an A.B. degree from Stanford University in history. He has written and spoken on international affairs and business topics, including trans-Atlantic relations, non-state actors and the governance of non-governmental organizations.

The French-American Foundation was founded in 1976 and, since that time, has been consistently committed to strengthening French-American relations and encouraging an active dialogue between the two countries at leadership levels, in order to promote a deeper mutual understanding and to reduce misperceptions. The French-American Foundation brings together French and American leaders, policy makers and other professionals to exchange views on common problems and to create productive, lasting links between people which have a far-reaching, long-term impact in both countries. To accomplish these objectives, the French-American Foundation seeks to maintain a consistently high level of intellectual leadership by arranging a wide variety of programs, including conferences, public opinion polls, reports, lectures, exchanges and study tours, designed to identify, explore and share exemplary practices from both countries.

The French-American Foundation is complemented by a sister foundation headquartered in Paris, the French-American Foundation Comité Français. The two organizations cooperate on many joint activities and programs, including the flagship Young Leaders Program of the French-American Foundation, which counts many distinguished alumni in prominent positions in both countries. In 2006, the French-American Foundation and the French-American Foundation Comité Français will celebrate their 30th anniversaries; the Young Leaders Program will commemorate its 25th anniversary.
