Tymoshenko to speak on where Ukraine is heading

24 January 2006

On Thursday 2 February, during a rare visit to Britain, Yulia Tymoshenko will speak at Chatham House on the current state of affairs in Ukraine and on the future direction of government.

A highly successful businesswoman and a pivotal player in the Orange Revolution, Tymoshenko was Ukrainian Prime Minister under President Victor Yushchenko for a large period of 2005. Since being controversially sacked in September of last year she has remained in politics and strengthened her position within parliament as well as with the people as she aims to regain the Prime Ministerial role during the March 2006 elections.

During her speech at Chatham House Ms Tymoshenko will give an assessment of the geo-political fallout of the recent gas dispute with Russia as well as discussing the continuing need to combat corruption in government and industry, and the key measures needed for Ukraine to grow its economy. In broader terms, the former Prime Minister will also talk about how Ukraine can accede to what she will claim is its rightful position at the crossroads of Europe.
