UN diplomat calls for more support for Palestinians
6 March 2007
The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees urged the west to stop isolating the Palestinian Authority following the recent agreement by Hamas and the rival Fatah faction to form a unity government. Karen Koning Abuzayd, commissioner-general of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), told a Chatham House audience that it is time 'to abandon the policy of isolation and replace it with an approach that is more conducive to peace and stability.'
She added that tragic consequences will follow if the west continues to isolate the Palestinian Authority by arming one side against the other and that it is vital to appeal to the Palestinians who are weary of war.
Karen Koning Abuzayd was at Chatham House to discuss aspects of the complex realities Palestinian refugees face. The discussion was based on her role with the UN and her experiences gained from living and working in Gaza for six years.
