Energy, Environment & Development Programme
Research Intern

The Energy, Environment and Development Programme at Chatham House have a vacancy for a Research Intern in our Energy Security research area. This is an exciting opportunity to gain valuable experience working at one of the world's foremost institutes for the study of International Relations. An intern assists the Programme staff by carrying out research assistance and general administrative tasks, which we hope will provide an excellent grounding to move from higher education into the employment market.

You will work 3 days per week for the Resource Depletion, Dependence & Development project and 2 days per week across the Energy, Environment and Development Programme generally. Your tasks will include collecting data and articles on oil and gas producing countries, companies and project investment. You will also assist senior researchers in checking and up-dating statistics and editing reports. You should have some knowledge of oil and development economics and experience in statistical research. It is essential that you are thoroughly proficient in creating and modifying charts and graphs using Excel and fluent in English. We are looking for someone who is capable, flexible and keen to make the most of this opportunity.

Application details

The placement would be for an initial period of three months on a full time basis, please state your availability in your application. Working hours are flexible but you will be expected to be available to assist at workshops which can involve longer hours than usual.

Start date: September - December 2008

Salary: Unpaid but lunch and travel expenses (within London) will be provided.

Conference Unit Internship - 2 positions

The Conference Unit at Chatham House is looking for two well organized individuals with excellent communications skills to help with the management and promotion of its busy schedule of events. We are looking for someone who is capable, flexible and keen to make the most out of this opportunity.

Requirements:
  • Excellent administrative and IT skills, good telephone manner.

Tasks will include the following:

  • Act as first point of contact for the department, dealing with queries, re-routing calls as appropriate
  • Provide general administrative support
  • Learn and perform marketing related tasks, from research to post-campaign analysis
  • Assist with research of topics / speakers for forthcoming events
  • Assist the conference managers with logistics support
  • Database building work. This will include calling professionals in order to obtain their contact details and inputting details in our database.
Application Details:

The placement would be for a period of three months. Although flexible, we are ideally looking for someone to work 4 days a week, please state your availability in your application. There will be an initial trial period. Working hours are from 09.30 - 5.30.

Start day: Monday 20 October 2008.

Other Information:

This position is unpaid. The successful applicants would have access to almost all relevant meetings and conferences within the Institute on a variety of international affairs related topics, free lunch at Chatham House and free use of the Library. Travel to and from work within London (zones 1&2 only) will be paid for the days worked. The successful applicants will also acquire significant experience in event management, research, marketing and general office duties.

If chosen, applicants should expect to come for a short interview at the House which will be held the week commencing Monday 29 September 2008.
