The Chatham House City Series continues in 2008 with a focus on the changing risks to the global economy
Now in its second year, the City Series is continuing throughout 2008 with a focus on the way in which the risks to the global economy are changing and will seek to identify the ensuing implications. The first event will look at the dramatic shifts occurring in the financial markets. Where do the risks now lie? Should the focus now be on unregulated capital flows? With liquidity and capital flows now seeming to be the norm, is a new inflation targeting model required?
The role of central banks and regulators
Central banks are perceived to be lagging in the current financial climate, and are being criticised for a knowledge deficit. Regulators are also struggling to keep up with the sea change. What steps need to be taken internationally to reverse this position?
New financial instruments
There has been a rapid proliferation of new financial instruments and vehicles over the last few years. What benefits do these bring? What risks do these pose? Should regulation be stepped up in this investment area or are market forces working well? What will be the impact of regulation on, for example, the private equity community? Will hedge funds continue their meteoric rise? Should there be an international regulator, and if so, who?
