Chatham House hosted this international meeting to discuss alternative models and finance mechanisms for the sustainable management and conservation of the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo on 17-18 December 2007.
The meeting was attended by some 100 participants, with representatives of government, international agencies, academia, civil society, conservation organisations and the private sector. Keynote speeches were given by Gareth Thomas, UK Minister for Trade and Development and José Endundo, DRC Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation and Tourism.
A range of models and proposals for the forests of DRC were presented and experiences from other parts of the world shared. The potential benefits and feasibility of the various options were discussed, and the steps required for their future development and piloting.
The meeting was supported by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), in association with the World Bank, European Commission, Belgian Development Cooperation, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the German Ministry of Economic and Development Cooperation.
A follow-up meeting is to be held in Kinshasa, DRC, in early 2008.
For further details about this event and related activities please contact Alison Hoare or Muzong Kodi.
