Africa in the International System

The foreign policies (or lack of them) of European Union members, the US and other countries are impartially assessed. This project considers the policies themselves, who has influence in forming them, and reactions to them in the region.

Over the last couple of years we have held meetings on American, British, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Indian and Russian policy. We have produced articles and briefing papers on British, French, Chinese and Indian policy as well as on European Union engagement with the African Union. View all papers.

In 2008 we focused on Japanese, Chinese and Indian policy. We are also undertaking a project to consider G8 developmental policy towards Africa and options for improving its effectiveness. This project is undertaken thanks to the generous support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

The Africa Programme has held a series of meetings and workshops on New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), The Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) and the UK's Commission for Africa in 2005. We worked on the 2008 TICAD summit in Japan and its relationship to Japan's presidency of the G8.

The current focus of our work is to assess follow-through on past commitments and the legacies of the 2005 Gleneagles pledges and the 2007 Heiligendamm summit commitments towards Africa. In 2008 and 2009 we are analysing the Africa content of the Japanese and Italian presidencies of the G8.
