In his first speech as Chief of the General Staff, the speaker will discuss current military operations, looking at the ways in which lessons learned from these engagements might inform our approach to preparing and equipping the UK armed forces in the coming decades. He will consider how this process is implemented, while exploring the possibilities and debates surrounding the essential character and nature of future conflict. General Richards became Chief of the General Staff in August 2009, having previously served as Commander-in-Chief Land Forces. Between 2006 and 2007 he was Commander of the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, in charge of NATO's troops in the south of the country.

The speech is on the record but the question and answer session is off the record.

E-tickets for the lecture will be sent on 15 September and must be presented on arrival.

The event will be followed by a pre-dinner reception (cash bar) and dinner at the Naval and Military Club, 4 St James's Square. Dress code for dinner will be black tie and medals.
