The speakers will discuss the changes in German society since the fall of the wall, focussing particularly on developments in Berlin. Anna Funder will provide a snapshot of life in East Berlin under communism and John F Jungclaussen will consider how life in Germany has changed since the fall of the wall and German reunification. The speakers will also consider both the difficulties posed by the economic disparity between east and west, which persists today, and the significance of Berlin's re-emergence as the political and cultural capital of a united Germany. The discussion will provide an opportunity to look forward at the domestic, European and international challenges facing Germany under its new coalition government.

There will not be a reception before the event, however informal drinks will follow the event at Davy's at St James' Wine Bar (Crown Passage, Pall Mall, SW1Y 6QY) from 8pm.
