‘Fragile States’ and the International Community

Intervention, Interference or Indifference?

22 February 2010 |

A conference organized in partnership with the BBC's The World Tonight

Attendance at this conference is reserved for Academic Institutional Members of Chatham House.

This timely conference will examine the concept of fragile states, and the means by which they may become stronger, with or without the help of the international community.

  • What is a fragile state? How is 'fragility' assessed?
  • How closely is the language of intervention aligned to foreign policy imperatives? Would more assistance be preferable, and what other types of foreign intervention can help strengthen fragile states?
  • To what extent has the international community been able to draw up best practice in dealing with ' fragile states'?
  • What is the way forward?

Organized for Chatham Houses academic institutional members, this event brings together key international policymakers, leading academics and media representatives to put forward their perspectives and engage in high-level debate on issues of strategic importance in the world of international affairs.
