Chatham House launches major EU-China Climate Security Project

Climate change and energy security have become core political issues in the EU over recent years. And as its huge economic rise continues, largely due to growth in industrial output, China is also confronting many climate change and energy challenges. There are clear similarities between the difficult issues faced by the EU and China over the next quarter of a century ranging from securing stable supplies of energy resources to advancing economic development and generating innovative market solutions to climate and energy security needs.

The Chatham House EU-China project (www.eu-china-energy-climate.net) will aim to establish a greater understanding of the interdependence and potential collaboration between the EU and China when faced with these challenges.

The project's three key aims will be to identify the EU and China's mutual interests, challenges and opportunities on energy security and climate change over the next 25 years; to generate a shared vision for achieving the goals of both regions in order to strengthen long-term engagement on these issues; and to produce high quality analysis on the priority opportunities for future collaboration to meet climate and energy security goals.

The research group plan to publish their findings in a report which will be ready for November 2007.
