In December 2007 Chatham House held a closed seminar to discuss Eritrea's regional role.

This paper, which emerged from the seminar, points to Eritrea's historical isolation and unwillingness to engage in 'the diplomatic game' as being key to its current situation. Poor diplomacy from other international actors and a sense of double standards by the international community with regard to Eritrea's border dispute with Ethiopia have also created mistrust and resentment.

The seminar brought together experts on Eritrea from around the world and was held as part of Chatham House's Horn of Africa Group collaboration with the Centre of African Studies, Rift Valley Institute and Royal African Society.
