Health and the G20: Saving Banks, Saving Lives
Sudeep Chand and David L Heymann, June 2010
The World Today, Volume 66, Number 6
This is a story about security, about economics, and about who is in charge. But most of all, it is about life and livelihoods. The global healthcare industry alone is worth $4.1 trillion a year. Yet the money used to bail out the banks and keep the world's economy moving is also important for health. The G20 group of advanced and emerging economies secures and saves lives. Does it realise this? Does it care? Perhaps yes, but its potential to save more lives is yet to be realised.
