On the face of it, South Africa's position on Sudan and Darfur is baffling and incongruous, wholly inconsistent with the country's historical struggle against oppression, its constitutional values and its foreign policy commitment to promote human rights. In this talk Laurie Nathan will attempt to explain that position and show that it exemplifies many of the key features of foreign policy under President Mbeki. In particular, the position highlights an anti-imperialist policy emphasis that colours and sometimes overrides the commitment to human rights.
