Making Trade Work for Development in Latin America
How can trade have a positive impact on the poorest in Latin America? Two decades of deepening trade liberalization and expanding trade flows in Latin America have brought growth and improvements in efficiency in key sectors; but poverty remains a big issue in the region. This conference will look at ways in which trade agreements can be used to enhance development and ensure that benefits from trade reach the poorest.
Leading thinkers and practitioners from Latin America will address key issues, such as:
- What are the challenges of linking trade and development?
- What roles can government policy-makers, private investors and civil society respectively have in enhancing the positive effects of trade?
- Can poverty reduction objectives be built into trade agreements? How can the private sector and civil society contribute to poverty reduction initiatives in trade?
- What strategies are available to promote workers' rights in the context of trade-led development?
- What roles do all players have in safeguarding the environment whilst promoting trade?
