John Man, author, The Great Wall (2008)
Chair: Jonathan Fenby, Director, China, Trusted Sources and author, History of Modern China (forthcoming 2008)
Type: Members event
Formerly a symbol of the division between barbarism and civilization, the Great Wall today is a symbol of a united China. The search for minerals has taken Chinese entrepreneurs across the border into the Gobi Desert. Chinese businesses are buying up property in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and Mongolians, recalling their former colonial status, are wary of trends that smack of a new imperialism. The speaker will analyse the changing relationship between China and Mongolia and prospects for the future.
John Man is a historian and writer with a special interest in China and Mongolia. He has published widely including Genghis Khan, The Terracotta Army and Gobi: Tracking the Desert.
