Sustainable Development: Us, Together
Jeffrey D Sachs, August 2007
The World Today, Volume 63, Number 8/9
The 'war' on terror; Islamic fundamentalism and other geopolitical preoccupations of the day have very little to do with the real challenges facing the planet. They are a distraction and a misunderstanding. We must begin talking to each other in all parts of the world, because the biggest challenge is not 'us against them', as many would have us believe. The biggest challenge is getting 'us, together', to achieve a path to sustainable development, which merges the two concepts of development and sustainability. While accomplishing one or the other on its own is complex, achieving both at once is the great, unresolved challenge of the twenty-first century.
Jeffrey D Sachs is Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development and Director of the Earth Institute, Colombia University.
