Europe - Current Projects
Chatham House undertakes a number of research projects and other activities related to European countries and Europe-related institutions. Some take place under the auspices of the Europe research area, but a larger number are undertaken in collaboration with other research programmes at the institute.
- Chinese Investment in Europe
This project explores how far the EU economy is benefiting from, or being buffeted by, the rise in Chinese FDI. It analyses how the rise of Chinese multinationals in Europe has been somewhat exaggerated in the media and explores how Chinese investment in Europe is still relatively insignificant for China. The aim is to provide a better understanding to policy-makers of how Chinese investment in Europe is impacting on Europe's economy, companies, and markets.
- European Security and Defence Forum
The European Security and Defence Forum (ESDF) has been set-up to analyze the shifts and developments in national and European security and defence policies. It will also work to promote a better understanding of Europe's strategic relationship with the United States.
- The Future of NATO
This project aims to analyse the strategic challenges facing NATO and consider the alliance's prospects for success in addressing new challenges. The project will look at the debates surrounding the structure and organization of NATO and questions on the issue of future expansion, uncertainty regarding ongoing military operations, and NATO's relationship with Russia.
- Interdependencies on Energy and Climate Security for China and Europe
This project aims to identify the EU and China's mutual interests, challenges, and opportunities on energy security and climate security. It seeks to explore how to harness the combined market power of the EU, the world's largest single market, and China, the world's fastest growing economy, to help drive progress towards sustainable development, including a transition towards a sustainable energy and a low carbon future.
- Re-establishing Security in the Black Sea Region
The focus of this project is politics and security in the Black Sea region. The project will explore NATO, the EU, and Russia's interests in the Black Sea region. It will also look at the sources of cohesion, division and vulnerability in post-Communist states in the region, and the growing security profile of the EU.
- Turkey Project
The project will endeavour to illuminate the important issues resulting from the geo-political and geo-economic position of Turkey, and its implications for British, European, US, Turkish and other governments' policies.
- Transatlantic Relations in a Changing Mediterranean Context: Smaller Steps to Security?
The focus of this project will be to reflect on the implications for US and EU policy of the changing dynamics of the Mediterranean region and the largely domestic security threats facing North Africa states and societies. It also examines whether differences in transatlantic policy approaches towards North Africa reflect fundamental divergences in EU and US priorities towards the region.
Past Projects
- Chatham House Commission on Europe after 50: Policy Implications for Britain
The Commission's objective was to develop a series of practical, non-partisan and forward-looking strategic options for pursuing UK policy interests through collaboration with other EU member states and institutions. The discussion at a series of meetings and workshops, held during 2007-08, formed the basis of a final report, 'A British Agenda for Europe: Designing Our Own Future' published in September 2008.
