About International Law Research |
The International Law (IL) research area was officially launched in February 2004. It provides a forum for lawyers and policy-makers to discuss international legal issues and their practical application to current problems in international relations.
In choosing subjects to be addressed, research will respond to expressions of need and interest by Chatham House members and other stakeholders.
Research topics include 'Accountability and Transnational Corporations: the potential for using civil claims' and 'Principles on the use of force by states in self-defence'. See Recent Projects for further details.
International Law Discussion Group
The International Law Discussion Group meets each month and is addressed by legal practitioners and other speakers drawn from academia, government, and the policy and business communities. These meetings are an opportunity to bring together a diverse community of UK-based individuals involved in various aspects of international law to discuss topical issues. Visitors from other countries are also invited where possible.
The meetings are open to anyone who would like to attend. A wide range of legal practitioners, business, diplomatic, media and academic experts are invited to these meetings, as are Chatham House's individual and corporate members.
Summaries of the proceedings at the discussion group meetings are produced, to bring the group to the notice of a wider audience and to increase understanding of the issues discussed.
Please contact Elizabeth Wilmshurst if you would like any additional information. View our research events page for details about the next discussion group meeting.
Support of IL Activities
There may be no better way to promote public understanding and appreciation of international law than to assist IL in expanding its outreach capacity.
IL is entirely self-financing and therefore depends on foundation and corporate support for all of its research and public outreach activities. If your organization would like to support any aspect of our work, please contact Elizabeth Wilmshurst.
