About the Russia and Eurasia Programme

The Russia and Eurasia Programme brings together the best thinking inside and outside government on the changing dynamics of this increasingly diverse region as well as their implications for the West and the wider world.

In all of its activities, the Programme aims to:

  • Produce lucid, analytically focused and well substantiated research and argument;
  • Provide forthright, interdisciplinary discussion of problems that demand an interdisciplinary approach;
  • Be a catalyst for debate rather than a guardian of consensus;
  • Achieve maximum geographical and thematic coverage through an international network of Associate Fellows;
  • Secure the participation of local experts in our projects;
  • Develop our relationships with governments in the region;
  • Deliver policy-relevant analysis to those who make policy;
  • Provide expert consultancy for the corporate sector;
  • Inform both the expert community and wider public through national and international media.

Scope

Established in 1986 as the Soviet Foreign Policy Programme at Chatham House, the Programme swiftly evolved after the collapse of the Soviet Union to cover external and internal policy issues not just in the Russian Federation, but in other newly independent states. Our challenge today is to reflect the disposition of forces and interests in the region without, in zero-sum terms, diminishing the high level of attention we have always devoted to Russia.

Activities

  • Forthcoming flagship projects on issues of immediate and longer-term importance;
  • A core series of roundtables and seminars;
  • Membership meetings and conferences hosting distinguished speakers on issues of moment;
  • Dedicated study groups (and a 'Russia Experts Group') to underpin long-term projects;
  • A series of short, policy-orientated Chatham House Briefings;
  • Regular publications by Programme staff and Associate Fellows in institute and non-institute publications;
  • A series of jointly authored and single-authored books on project-related themes and issues.
